Torvald's nephew, Dolin, told them how the vampires had attacked and how his mother tried to fight them off with a torch and it was she who actually started the fire that destroyed the farm. The livestock did not perish in the flames though, the vampires ate or slaughtered them. Dolin wasn't sure which and it was hard to tell from the bodies. The rest of the morning had been spent with Angel entertaining and comforting Dolin -which probably included her teaching him a few of her favorite moves against vampires- while the four men built a pyre and piled what was left of the livestock. The farm is too close to town to risk leaving rotting corpses to breed disease.
Thaun and Rhade had been kind enough to invite them to the Dupree Academy for lunch, probably half out of pity for their lose and half because burring dead together builds a strange bond between humans. There was no getting around revealing who they were. Torvald and Vedric couldn't work in the hot Serenity autumn in their cloaks and so their hair had been revealed. The other men made promise not to mention in, and in fact it was not brought up at all during their lunch despite others being there. When asked, Thaun actually volunteered the information that Torvald, Vedric, and Angel were travelers passing through rather than telling his family they were Croxx.
After lunch the trio went to find lodgings for their stay in Serenity. Given that they had work to do, they took Rhade up on his offer to keep Dolin until they were ready to head back to Hana'Var. Since Rhade was a father of two already and the trio had no parenting skills between them, it seemed like as good a plan as any. The boy protested at first until Rhade offered to let him join some classes in the Academy so he could hone his vampire hunting skills. The boy was already showing himself to be a true Croxx and took to the cause as if he'd been raised for it.
It was now late in the afternoon. Torvald and Vedric led Angel to the magic district where they had a friend that would give them discounts on special items of enchantment and power. The shop keeper had lost family to vampires and was more than happy to help supply the Croxx. The Croxx would have paid full price, but the shop keeper insisted on the discount. One such item bought on the last trip saved at least one Croxx life. Dolin lived because Torvald had given him a Solar Orb. A soft amber colored glass ball about three inches in diameter that when activated would be surrounded by the power of the sun. Deadly to vampires. Dolin had actually taken out a couple of vampires already and he was only twelve. Torvald couldn't wait to praise him to the others back home, he was as proud as if the boy were his son instead of his nephew.
They stood in the street outside the shop now. Torvald was hearing his hood, but not his cloak, as it was rather hot. He'd actually taken the cloak off at dinner, while Vedric seemed unbothered and continued with his own cloak. Vedric had his enchanted to keep a decent temperature last time they were here so now he's not bothered by the heat. When it's cold, like back at home he won't be bothered by that either. Torvald turns to look at Angel while they are still on the sidewalk just outside the shop. “We need to get that enchantment.” He notions toward Vedric with his head.
“It's nice,” Vedric replies. “When it's cold and snowing and you're freezing your ass off, but then suddenly fire is exploding around you because you're fighting vampires and so one side of you is too hot and the other is too cold and you get that strange sick feeling. . . I don't have a problem, I stay even all around. Neither weather nor fire will interfere with my hunt.”
